A fee name does not tell you who receives the money or whether the charge applies to your lease. Ask for each item in dollars before choosing an offer.
Start with the doc-fee checker, then review the complete worksheet in the quote checker. A flag is a reason to ask a question, not proof that a fee breaks the law.
Put each charge in the right group
| Group | What to check |
|---|---|
| Government charges | Ask which agency sets the title, registration or tax charge and how it was calculated. |
| Lessor charges | Ask who sets the acquisition, purchase-option or return fee and when it is payable. |
| Dealer charges | Ask what documentation, processing, preparation or delivery covers and whether another line charges for the same work. |
| Optional products | Ask for the separate price, your choice to decline and any cancellation terms. |
A dealer fee is not a government charge simply because it appears beside registration. A lessor fee may be part of a lender's program; ask whether the quoted amount includes a markup.
Ask about products before discussing the payment
Service contracts, protection packages and accessories can be easy to miss when their prices are folded into the lease. Request an itemized quote with and without each product you do not want.
If someone says a product is required, ask who requires it and where that requirement appears in writing. Do not assume every item on a preprinted form is mandatory.
Check timing and double counting
Find out whether each charge is paid at signing, added to the financed lease balance or due at the end. A financed charge affects the payment too. Include it once in your comparison.
A quote that removes a fee but raises the car price may leave the total cost unchanged. Compare matching terms, mileage, taxes and signing money in the quote comparison tool.
State rules need more than a fee amount
Documentation-fee rules vary by state and transaction. A missing limit in our research means unknown. It does not mean there is no limit. A possible cap may have conditions, dates or exceptions that need checking.
Ask for the current official source and why it covers your lease. A sample or typical fee is not a legal maximum. Our tools do not resolve every fee or tax rule.
Words you can use
Please send the selling price and every fee separately. For each fee, show who receives it, whether it is required, and whether I pay it now, through the payments or at return. Please quote the same lease without the optional products.
Keep the written quote and compare it with the final contract. See dealer quote traps for more questions to ask.
Sources and limits
The FTC's financing and leasing guide explains comparing written costs and optional add-ons. Regulation M's disclosure rules cover signing amounts, payment schedules and other lease charges. Neither source establishes the legal status of a particular dealer fee. State-specific conclusions need current state authority.
