Moving with a leased car: plan before you book

By Lease A Car Direct · Reviewed by Lease A Car Direct editorial team on 2026-11-03

Moving does not automatically end your lease or give you permission to relocate the car. Start with your leasing company before choosing a transport date.

Tell it where the car will be kept and whether the move is temporary or permanent. A move within the United States and a move abroad can have different restrictions.

Get the lessor's instructions

Ask these questions through the lessor's verified account or support channel:

  • Does my contract permit this move, and is written permission needed?
  • What address and vehicle-location information must I update?
  • Who supplies the title or authorization for registration in the new state?
  • Will tax, billing, insurance requirements or lease-end return arrangements change?
  • If I ship the car, are there any contract or insurance conditions to meet?

Keep the answers. Ford Credit's account services overview lists a process to request documents for another state's registration. Your own lessor may use a different process.

Check the destination state's requirements

Use the new state's DMV and revenue agency for deadlines, registration documents, inspections and tax treatment. Ask how to register a car when the lessor holds the title. Do not assume your existing registration can simply be carried over.

Tax paid in one state does not guarantee that nothing is due in another. Ask about credits and remaining-payment treatment. Our lease-tax guide explains the questions; it does not decide your moving tax.

Tell your insurer where the car will be garaged and confirm when any coverage changes take effect. Ask about coverage during transport separately from the carrier's cargo policy.

Compare driving and shipping

For driving, budget fuel or charging, lodging, meals, time and any extra lease miles. Use the mileage planner to explore how the trip affects your allowance.

For shipping, request the full price, pickup and delivery arrangements, cancellation terms and damage-claim process. Check whether you are dealing with a transport broker or the carrier that will move the car.

The FMCSA's automobile transporter advisory explains the distinction and how to check registration. An estimated pickup window is not a guaranteed delivery date.

The shipping estimator provides a planning range. Confirm a written quote and the assumptions before booking. Lease A Car Direct and Ship A Car, Inc. are affiliated companies; our money page explains that connection. Shipping is a separate paid service.

Prepare the car and keep records

Follow the carrier's preparation instructions. Photograph the car's condition and mileage, inspect it at handoff and delivery, and keep the condition reports and transport documents. Ask how to record damage before signing a delivery receipt.

Keep lease payments current through the move. Confirm the new address, insurance and registration records afterward. If you need to end the lease instead, get written options first; read ending a lease early.
